Highlights
The rebound continues for the auto sector despite the absence of new government incentives and despite the weak jobs market. Sales of domestic-made vehicles came in at an 8.2 million annual rate in November, sizably above the 7.9 million rate in October. The results point to a month-to-month gain for the motor vehicle component of the Commerce Department's retail sales report (to be posted a week from Friday). Chain stores will post their monthly results on Thursday, offering indications for the ex-auto ex-gas category.

Market Consensus Before Announcement
Sales of domestic light motor vehicles in October rebounded 17.2 percent to 7.8 million units as sales returned to normal-at least for the current recovery. Combined sales of domestics and imports in rose to a 10.5 million annualized unit rate from 9.2 million in September. Now that the monthly swings from cash-for-clunkers have been wrung out from the data, November will stand out as a possibly true measure of the strength of demand for motor vehicles and of the viability of the consumer sector to a large degree.
|
Definition
Unit sales of domestically produced cars and light duty trucks (including sport utility vehicles and mini-vans). Individual manufacturers report usually report sales on the first business day of the month. Motor vehicle sales are good indicators of trends in consumer spending.
