Highlights
Chain stores reported mostly soft sales for May, a month hurt by unseasonably cool weather early in the month but helped by a warm spell at month's end. Year-on-year same-store sales trends moved down from the mid-to-low positive single digits to the low positive single digits. The exclusion of the Sunday and Monday of the Memorial weekend in the chains' May 29 period hurt sales for some chains though comments here were mixed. Today's results point to mild weakness for the ex-auto ex-gasoline category in the monthly sales report for May, a month of tough seasonal adjustments that may overpower the unadjusted results.

Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.
