Highlights
Chain-store sales were soft in June pointing to a second straight decline for the Commerce Department's ex-auto ex-gas category. Light traffic is a common theme in today's reports along with continued consumer caution. Sales trends are nearly even with May which remember was a disappointing month. Even if ex-auto ex-gas sales manage to match May's total, they will be well below April which more and more looks to have been a peak for the retail sector.
Today's results would have been softer if not for a calendar shift of Memorial Day into the June retail calendar month, a factor that should be neutralized by Commerce adjustments. Commerce adjustments are generally favorable for the June-to-May comparison, a factor that may limit June's weakness. Yet overall, the retail sector, like the non-manufacturing economy in general, appears to have lost steam.

Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.
