Chain Store Sales
Released On 4/7/2011 For Mar, 2011

Highlights
Though some chains show no effect at all, many do report a significant calendar effect from this year's late Easter. Total year-on-year sales growth moved from a mid single digit trend to a low digit trend. Same-store sales growth moved from the low to mid single digits to the very low single digits. Even with calendar adjustments, today's reports point to the risk of mild trouble for the ex-auto ex-gas category of the March retail sales report.

Many chains also said high gas prices siphoned off sales as did unseasonable weather which held down demand for spring goods. March's troubles aside, most chains are sticking to prior guidance amid expectations that warm weather and Easter sales will pull April solidly higher.

Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.  Why Investors Care
