Highlights
Upward surprises outnumbered disappointments in what looks to have been a solid but still mixed month of April for the nation's chain stores. A number of chains raised earnings guidance following today's results but not sales guidance. And a couple of chains scaled back guidance. Easter shifts always make the year-on-year unadjusted comparisons of April and March hard to read but today's results hint at another month of growth for the ex-auto ex-gas category of the government's retail sales report, a category that rose 0.6 percent in March following nearly 1 percent gains in the prior two months.

Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.
