Chain Store Sales
Released On 6/2/2011 For May, 2011

Highlights
Flat to soft is the best description for May chain-store sales that were held down by high gas prices and by unfavorable weather in the first half of the month. In a sign of confidence, chains are sticking to guidance with some noting that warming temperatures will give a pent-up boost to seasonal sales in June. High-end chains, whose customers are less affected by high gas prices, are definitely the exception, posting increasing rates of growth and lifting guidance. In sum, today's results point to little month-to-month change for the ex-auto ex-gas reading of the May retail sales report which will be released at mid-month.

Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.  Why Investors Care
