Chain Store Sales
Released On 8/4/2011 For Jul, 2011

Chain-store sales proved solid in July with low-end and high-end chains the best performers. Deep discounters are attracting more and more struggling consumers away from the traditional discount chains. Some high-end chains, such as Saks, are posting mid-teens year-on-year sales growth in what suggests that the high-end consumer is as comfortable as ever. A telling sign of the success of July is that a run of chains raised guidance with very few lowering guidance. As a whole, today's results point to another gain for the government's ex-auto ex-gas category of the retail sales report, one that has shown three straight 0.2 percent monthly gains and seven straight gains overall. The retail sales report will be posted a week from Friday.

Monthly sales volumes from individual department, discount, apparel, and drugstore chains are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.  Why Investors Care
