Chain Store Sales
Released On 4/5/2012 For Mar, 2012

Highlights
Chain-store sales in March were a little stronger than guidance, pointing to another monthly gain for the ex-auto ex-gas category of the government's retail sales report. Slightly more chains posted accelerating year-on-year sales rates in March vs year-on-year rates in February, with several chains, in what is a convincing sign of strength, raising guidance following March's results. Chains say March got a boost from the month's warm weather which raised demand for spring merchandise.

Easter effects during March and April usually cloud the year-on-year comparisons that chain stores report with this year's earlier Easter (April 8 vs April 24) moving sales into March at the expense of April. Whether today's results point to accelerating strength in the government's month-on-month adjusted data is uncertain. Yet given gains of 0.6 percent in February and 1.0 percent in January for the ex-auto ex-gas category, even a moderating monthly gain for March would be a plus for first-quarter totals. The government's retail sales report will be posted a week after next.

Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, discount, apparel, and drugstore chains are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.  Why Investors Care
