Chain Store Sales
Released On 5/3/2012 For Apr, 2012

Sales are firm and on trend at the nation's chain stores some of which are raising guidance following their April results. Expressed on a year-on-year same-store unadjusted basis, chain store sales in April show less growth than March due to this year's calendar shift for Easter which fell early in the month and moved sales into March. But a look at both months together, which is a must for the Easter period, points to steady rates of growth consistent with the solid upward slope of the retail sales recovery. The government will adjust for the Easter shift in its monthly report for April which, based on today's reports, should show another month of gains.

Monthly sales volumes from individual department, discount, apparel, and drugstore chains are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.  Why Investors Care
