Chain Store Sales
Released On 10/4/2012 For Sep, 2012

Slowing growth in year-on-year sales is September's trend at the nation's chain stores. But rates of growth are still respectable and in line with the year-to-date trend. This year-to-date view hints at an incremental monthly increase for the ex-auto ex-gas category of the government's retail sales report, a category that popped up sharply in July only to stall in August. That makes August a soft comparison which can only help the September result.

Commentary is mixed with some chains reporting problems tied to Hurricane Isaac at the start of the month and some chains reporting particular strength at month end. Pharmacy sales are sharply lower in the month due to generic introductions. Shares of retailers are mostly higher following today's results.

Monthly sales volumes from individual department, discount, apparel, and drugstore chains are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.  Why Investors Care
