Chain Store Sales
Released On 11/1/2012 For Oct, 2012

Highlights
Chain stores are reporting slightly higher rates of year-on-year growth in October but not enough to signal a significant monthly gain for the government's ex-auto ex-gas reading. Many chains are nudging up earnings guidance following the results, though a couple are also scaling back guidance. The month's warm weather hurt sales of seasonal goods at some chains but otherwise October, at least up to the October 27 reporting date for monthly sales, was free of special factors. But Hurricane Sandy will definitely move sales to basics and perhaps away from discretionary goods late in the month and early into this month. Some chains are reporting wide store closures in their Northeast stores.

Definition
Monthly sales volumes from individual department, chain, discount, and apparel stores are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.  Why Investors Care
