Chain Store Sales
Released On 11/29/2012 For Nov, 2012

Strength in the second-half of the month couldn't quite offset storm-related weakness in the first half of the month. Chain stores are reporting mostly lower rates of year-on-year sales growth during November than they did in October, the result of lost sales from Hurricane Sandy which closed stores in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. A slower rate of sales growth is a negative signal for the government's ex-auto ex-gas reading, a reading that was already a disappointment in October with a 0.3 percent monthly decline. But chain stores expect to quickly make up the lost sales which, together with what chains are saying is strong momentum from Black Friday, point to strength for the government's December sales report.

Monthly sales volumes from individual department, discount, apparel, and drugstore chains are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.  Why Investors Care
