Over the last two weeks, ICSC-Goldman's year-on-year same-store retail sales index has been moving straight up as this year's early Easter (April 8 vs April 24) moved related sales into late March and early April at the expense of mid and late April. The report's weekly change has also come to life, up 0.5 percent in the latest week following the prior week's 3.8 percent surge. Data from rival chain-store indicator Redbook have also been coming to life but to a lesser degree and from a higher base. Redbook will be posted at 8:55 a.m. ET.
This weekly measure of comparable store sales at major retail chains, published by the International Council of Shopping Centers, is related to the general merchandise portion of retail sales. It accounts for roughly 10 percent of total retail sales.
