Chain Store Sales
Released On 1/3/2013 For Dec, 2012

December proved to be a real mixed bag for chain stores, some of which are now lifting guidance and some are lowering guidance. Many chains say sales got off to a slow start in the month, forcing markdowns that made for strong sales at month-end but sales that came at the expense of margins. As far as the monthly retail sales report from the government goes, sales are all that count which is of course unlike the stock market where profits are pretty much all that count.

Together, today's chain-store reports do not offer a clear picture of what to expect for December's ex-auto ex-gas category. But what is clear is that November's big 0.7 percent rise for this category, which unless revised lower, is a tough month-to-month comparison for December.

Monthly sales volumes from individual department, discount, apparel, and drugstore chains are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.  Why Investors Care
