Chain Store Sales
Released On 7/11/2013 For Jun, 2013

Retail sales growth held steady and firm in June based on today's chain-store sales reports where year-on-year rates are little changed from May. There are not very many chains issuing monthly statements anymore but the few remaining are generally pleased with their June results which some say got a lift from seasonable weather that helped sales of summer goods. The results point to yet another ex-auto ex-gas gain which is considered a core reading for the retail sector. This reading is on a year-long winning streak with recent gains moderate to solid, at 0.3 percent in May and 0.5 percent in April. Retail sales for June will be posted on Monday.

Monthly sales volumes from individual department, discount, apparel, and drugstore chains are usually reported on the first Thursday of each month. Chain store sales correspond with roughly 10 percent of retail sales. Chain store sales are an indicator of retail sales and consumer spending trends. There is no official composite number for each month's sales, merely sales figures for individual chains. Also, which chains release monthly numbers varies over time as corporate policies sometimes change in regard to providing monthly numbers to the public in addition to quarterly data.  Why Investors Care
