Same-store sales firmed 0.1 percent last week with the year-on-year rate coming in at a solid plus 2.9 percent for the best rate since mid-January. But what today's ICSC-Goldman report stresses most is the negative effect of heavy weather which it says has "clearly tempered" this month's sales. The report also warns that sales this week are likely to be tempered by Friday's approach of the government's sequestration. Redbook will post its weekly results later this morning at 8:55 a.m. ET.
This weekly measure of comparable store sales at major retail chains, published by the International Council of Shopping Centers, is related to the general merchandise portion of retail sales. It accounts for roughly 10 percent of total retail sales.
