ICSC-Goldman's same-store sales index shot up 4.7 percent in the March 30 week but in a rebound boosted by weakness in the prior week, weakness that backed up demand for Easter-related goods. Year-on-year, ICSC-Goldman's tally remains very soft at only plus 1.9 percent. The report notes that cold weather hurt sales of spring apparel in the week. Chain stores will post their March sales a week from Thursday.
This weekly measure of comparable store sales at major retail chains, published by the International Council of Shopping Centers, is related to the general merchandise portion of retail sales. It accounts for roughly 10 percent of total retail sales.
