Same-store sales popped higher in the April 6 week, up 0.7 percent to a still very soft plus 2.1 percent year-on-year rate. Cold weather continued to hold down demand for spring apparel in the week as it did through March, according to the report which sees a soft plus 2.0 to 3.0 percent year-on-year pace for the full month of March. Chain stores will post their March results on Thursday with Redbook posting its weekly results later this morning at 8:55 a.m. ET.
This weekly measure of comparable store sales at major retail chains, published by the International Council of Shopping Centers, is related to the general merchandise portion of retail sales. It accounts for roughly 10 percent of total retail sales.
