Retail categories posted wide declines in the August 31 week according to ICSC-Goldman's same-store sales index which fell 0.6 percent. The year-on-year rate of plus 1.8 percent is one of the very lowest of the year. The report cites summer malaise for the trouble, despite which it still sees a steady rate of monthly growth for August as a whole. Redbook will post its results later this morning at 8:55 a.m. ET.
This weekly measure of comparable store sales at major retail chains, published by the International Council of Shopping Centers, is related to the general merchandise portion of retail sales. It accounts for roughly 10 percent of total retail sales.
