Highlights
Frigid weather in the Midwest and Northeast, together with statistical noise at year end, made for a very steep 5.4 percent decline in same-store sales in the January 4 week, this despite heavy promotions at most stores. The week's year-on-year rate for ICSC-Goldman's sample fell almost in half, to plus 1.7 percent vs 3.0 percent in the prior week. The report notes that only grocery stores and online retailers posted solid sales in the week.
