Store Sales Y/Y change2.7 %2.9 %

Redbook doesn't show the burst of strength that ICSC-Goldman does for the June 1 week, but the report does show greater full-month strength than ICSC-Goldman. Redbook's year-on-year same-store sales rate of plus 2.9 percent is up 2 tenths from the prior week and is slightly above the two-month trend. But Redbook's month-to-month call for May is very strong, at plus 0.6 percent in a reading that points to strength for the government's ex-auto ex-gas category. ICSC-Goldman data, in contrast, point at best to no monthly change for May. A group of 15 chain stores will post their monthly results on Thursday.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
