Foreign Demand for Long-Term U.S. Securities$25.5 B$31.3 B$35.4 B

Foreign demand for US long-term securities, which had slowed through mid-year on expectations for FOMC tapering, picked back up for a second month in October, showing a net inflow of $35.4 billion following an upwardly revised inflow of $31.3 billion in September.

Foreign demand for Treasuries was especially strong in both months as was demand for US equities. Limiting the inflow was continued US demand for foreign long-term securities as US accounts were net buyers of $19.2 billion following September's very heavy net buying of $31.7 billion.

National data for US Treasury holders shows an easing in Japanese buying which has been very heavy this year reflecting low interest rates in Japan. Japanese holdings eased slightly to $1.17 trillion with China showing a second monthly gain, to $1.30 trillion in October.

These Treasury data track the flows of financial instruments into and out of the United States. Instruments tracked include Treasury securities, agency securities, corporate bonds, and corporate equities.  Why Investors Care
