FOMC Minutes
Released On 8/16/2017 2:00:00 PM For 8/16/2017 2:00:00 PM

Some FOMC members wanted to begin balance-sheet unwinding at the last meeting in July but were outnumbered by those wanting to push the debate to the upcoming meeting in September. The stumbling block is the lack of inflation though the hunch among some members is that "idiosyncratic factors" (a likely reference to soft cell phone and gasoline prices) are responsible and that inflation is very likely to pick up and begin moving, though more slowly than first expected, toward their 2 percent target.

The minutes support the possibility that the FOMC, seeing the economy running moderate and steady, will begin tapering down their $4.5 trillion balance sheet next month though the lack of inflation is a wildcard along of course with the unfolding of other economic data including the August employment report. Stocks are little changed in reaction to the minutes and early reaction in the Treasury market is also limited though demand is higher.

The Federal Open Market Committee issues minutes of its meetings with a lag. The minutes of the previous meeting are reported three weeks after the meeting.  Why Investors Care
