Store Sales Y/Y change2.2 %0.9 %

Same-store sales were up just 0.9 percent year-on-year in the January 7 week, a marked slowdown of the 2 percent-plus pace set in the prior two weeks. Month-to-date sales versus the prior month were down 3.1 percent, while full month year-on-year sales were up 0.9 percent, down 0.6 percentage points from the 1.5 percent year-on-year monthly gain seen in the final week of December. The slowdown in the first week of the year casts some doubt on the sustainability of the strong sales registered by retailers thanks to an exuberantly confident consumer in December.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
