Store Sales Y/Y change0.3 %0.2 %

Same-store sales were up just 0.2 percent year-on-year in the January 28 week, continuing the deacceleration of the prior weeks from the strong 2.1 and 2.2 percent year-on-year gains seen in the final two weeks of last year. Month-to-date same store sales were down 3.5 percent from December, while year-on-year monthly sales were up only 0.4 percent, the weakest reading since August. The sales growth slowdown in Redbook's sample points to weakness in core retail sales for January.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
