Store Sales Y/Y change1.3 %1.2 %

Same store sales were up 1.2 percent year-on-year in the March 18 week, slightly easing from prior week's 1.3 percent growth pace but retaining the resumed strength seen since mid-February. Month-to-date same store sales were down 0.6 percent from February sales, unchanged from the prior week's reading, but monthly sales were up 1.2 percent from the year ago level, a 0.1 percentage point improvement over the prior week and the fastest growth pace so far this year. After a shaky start in January, retailers in Redbook's sample continue to report better year-on-year sales comparisons since mid-February, pointing to strength in core retail sales for March and indicating that consumers may actually be acting in keeping with their expressed confidence.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
