Same store sales were up only 0.6 percent year-on-year in the March 25 week, slowing down abruptly from the 1.0 percent plus growth pace seen in the previous 5 weeks. Month-to-date same store sales were down 0.7 percent from February, deepening the decline by 0.1 percentage points from the prior week's reading, while the year-on-year gain in monthly sales fell by 0.2 percentage points from the prior week to 1.0 percent. Retailers in Redbook's sample are reporting the first substantial slowdown since the acceleration in yearly sales gain comparisons that began in Mid-February, putting in question the strength of core retail sales indicated in prior reports.
