Store Sales Y/Y change1.3 %1.6 %

Same store sales were up 1.6 percent year-on-year in the April 8 week, posting this year's best weekly gain versus the year ago level. Versus the prior month, month-to-date same store showed a respectable 0.9 percent gain, the first positive reading since the end of February. Full month year-on-year sales were up 1.6 percent, also the strongest reading of the year. Retailers in the Redbook same store sample appear to be finally seeing evidence that the high confidence reported by consumers in recent months is also being expressed through increased purchases, and the report points to strong core retail sales for the current period.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
