Store Sales Y/Y change2.3 %1.7 %

Same store sales are up 1.7 percent year-on-year in the April 22 week, a slowing of the prior week's gains pace which at 2.3 percent posted the strongest annual growth since January 2016. Month-to-date same store sales were up 1.2 percent versus the prior month, matching the strongest reading since May of last year. Year-on-year monthly sales growth slowed by 0.1 percentage point from the prior week to 1.9 percent, which is still the second strongest gain in at least a year. Despite the week's slowing in the year-on-year growth rate, retailers in Redbook's sample are still registering the best sales performance comparisons since December and are confirming that at least some of the high consumer confidence recorded in surveys is being expressed through increased buying activity.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
