Store Sales Y/Y change1.7 %2.3 %

Same store sales year-on-year growth accelerated by 0.6 percentage points to a 2.3 percent rate in the April 29 week, matching the April 15 week for the strongest year-on-year weekly reading in the Redbook sample since January 2016. Month-to-date same store sales were up 1.3 percent versus March, increasing the pickup in the month-to-month comparison strength shown in the prior 2 weeks to the strongest gains since May 2016. And year-on-year monthly sales growth rose to 2.0 percent, the fastest rate in at least a year. Retailers in Redbook's sample are registering the best sales performance comparisons since December in the last 3 weeks, indicating that some of the high consumer confidence recorded in surveys is finally being expressed through purchases following a disappointingly sluggish first quarter.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
