Store Sales Y/Y change2.4 %2.0 %

Same store sales were up 2.0 percent year-on-year in the May 20 week, easing but still going strong after the previous week's faster pace when the 2.4 percent year-on-year gain was the biggest since January 2016. Month-to-date monthly sales were down 1.1 percent versus April, however, the third consecutive negative weekly reading in this comparison. But Redbook's full month same store sales compared to the year ago period were up a respectable 1.9 percent, maintaining the stronger pace in place since April 8. Retailers in Redbook's sample have been showing better sales since the end of the sluggish first quarter, indicating at least a continuation in May of the moderately strong ex-gas ex-auto results shown in the government's retail sales report for April.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
