Store Sales Y/Y change2.0 %1.8 %

Same store sales were up 1.8 percent year-on-year in the May 27 week, moderately easing from the gains pace of the prior two weeks, which posted the largest year-on-year gain since January 2016. Month-to-date sales were down 1.1 percent versus April, however, the fourth consecutive negative weekly reading. But versus the year-ago month, Redbook's full month same store sales were up 1.9 percent, in line with the stronger pace established in mid-April after a sluggish first quarter. Redbook's same store sales continue to point to ex-gas ex-auto retail sales for May that are at least as strong as the moderately strong recovery from first quarter weakness shown in the results for April.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
