Store Sales Y/Y change2.5 %2.1 %

Same store sales year-on-year growth slowed by 0.4 percentage points to a 2.1 percent rate in the June 10 week after posting the strongest gain since January 2016 in the prior week. Month-to-date same store sales versus the previous month were up 0.5 percent, 0.2 percentage points less than the gain shown in the prior week. The year-on-year gain in full month sales also cooled by 0.2 percentage points to 2.3 percent, following the largest gain for this comparison in at least a year during the prior week. The sales acceleration seen by retailers in Redbook's sample since mid-April faltered slightly in the week, indicating once again that the consumer is less spendthrift than reports of high consumer confidence would appear to prognosticate.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
