Store Sales Y/Y change2.7 %2.4 %

Same store sales were up 2.4 percent year-on-year in the July 8 week, slowing down the year-on-year growth pace of the prior week, which was the second strongest since January 2016, by 0.3 percentage points. Versus June, month-to-date same store sales turned negative and were down 1.1 percent after showing gains since the end of May. But full month year-on-year sales were still up a respectable 2.4 percent, retaining the growth rate of the June weeks. The sales pace slackening seen this week is disappointing to retailers in Redbook's sample after June's solid results, the strongest in 17 months, and may point to a return back to the weakness seen in May and to weaker ex-auto, less-gas retail sales for July.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
