Store Sales Y/Y change2.4 %2.0 %

Same store sales were up 2.0 percent year-on-year in the July 15 week, continuing the slackening of pace seen in the prior week from the 2.7 percent year-on-year growth, which was the second highest in 18 months, recorded two weeks ago. Month-to-date same store sales versus June fell further into negative territory and were down 1.3 percent, while the prior week's 2.4 percent year-on-year full month sales gain was pared down to 2.0 percent, the weakest reading since the May 27 week. The sales deceleration of Redbook's same store sample points to continuation of the weakness in ex auto less gas retail sales seen in last week's retail sales report for June.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
