Store Sales Y/Y change2.0 %2.1 %

Same stores sales were up 2.1 percent year-on-year in the July 22 week, picking up the pace by 0.1 percentage points from the prior week but still well off the 2.8 percent growth, a 17-month high, seen in the June 17 week. Month-to-date same store sales versus June remained down 1.3 percent, while full month year-on-year sales were up 2.2 percent, unchanged from the prior week's reading. Redbook's same store sample sales have decelerated in recent weeks to a year-on-year growth rate hovering just above 2.0 percent, which is respectable and twice the rate during the first quarter, but this growth is somewhat disappointing after the surge in mid-June that appeared to show the consumer finally acting in line with the expectations aroused by high consumer confidence survey readings.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
