Store Sales Y/Y change2.1 %2.8 %

Same store sales year-on-year growth accelerated by 0.7 percentage points to a 2.8 percent rate in the July 29 week, matching the June 17 week, which was the strongest year-on-year gain for the Redbook sample since January 5, 2016. Month-to-date same store sales versus the previous month were down 1.2 percent, however, the fourth consecutive negative reading in this comparison. But year-on-year, full month same store sales were up a healthy 2.3 percent, just off the pace seen in June and early July. Though not as strong as in June, the sales results of retailers in Redbook's sample did register another good month, pointing to strength for ex-auto less gas retail sales for July.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
