Store Sales Y/Y change2.7 %2.5 %

Same store sales slowed to a 2.5 percent year-on-year growth rate in the August 12 week, down 0.2 percentage points from the prior week's pace and 0.3 percentage points down from the July 29 week, when the posted 2.8 percent annual growth matched the strongest gain since January 2016. Month-to-date same store sales were down 0.4 percent versus the prior month, the sharpest drop in this reading since May 27. But year-on-year full month sales were up a strong 2.6 percent, the second strongest reading in at least two years, beat only by the 2.7 percent gain posted in the prior week. Redbook's same store sample continues to show retailers reporting that the upswing in sales seen since the second half of June is still intact, pointing to continuing strength for ex-auto less-gas retail sales.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
