Same store sales accelerated to a 3.2 percent year-on-year growth pace in the August 19 week, the strongest year-on-year gain registered since December 2015. August month-to-date sales were still showing a loss versus July at minus 0.2 percent, but monthly sales were up 2.8 percent compared to the same period last year, which was the strongest year-on-year monthly gain in at least a year. Retailers in Redbook's same store sales sample are seeing the strongest sales growth in 20 months, pointing to a likely pickup in August ex-auto less gas retail sales.
