Store Sales Y/Y change4.5 %3.6 %

Same store sales growth slowed to 3.6 percent year-on-year in the September 16 week, down 0.9 percentage points from the prior week's gain, the strongest since December 2015. Month-to-date sales were up 0.1 percent, down from 0.3 percent in the prior week, while year-on-year full month sales growth fell back to 4.1 percent, 0.3 percentage points below the prior week's reading, which was the highest in over two years. The week's downtick takes year-on-year growth in the Redbook's same store sales below 4 percent for the first time in four weeks, and begs the question whether it marks the end of this period's impressive sustained strength, or the start of a temporary setback related to the impact of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
