Highlights
The Baker Hughes North American rig count is up 13 rigs in the July 21 week to 1,156, continuing its climb higher in a run that was up 11 of the last 12 weeks, with Canadian drillers dominating since the beginning of June as they resume full operation after their Spring Breakup hiatus. The U.S rig count was down 2 rigs to 950 and is up 488 rigs from last year at this time. The Canadian count is up 15 rigs to 206 and and is up 104 rigs from last year.

For the U.S. count, rigs classified as drilling for oil are down 1 rig to 764 and gas rigs are also down 1 rig to 186. For the Canadian count, oil rigs are up 12 to 118 and gas rigs are up 3 to 88.

Definition
The Baker Hughes North American rig count tracks weekly changes in the number of active operating oil & gas rigs. Used for drilling wellbores for wells that may eventually produce oil or gas, active rigs are essential for the exploration and development of oil and gas fields. Rigs that are not active are not counted. Components in the data are the United States and Canada with a separate count for the Gulf of Mexico (which is a subset of the U.S. total).
