Highlights
ADP is calling for substantial strength in Friday's employment report, at 246,000 for private payrolls. This is far beyond expectations and would compare with December private payroll growth in the government's report of 144,000 (ADP's count for December is revised slightly lower to 151,000). Today's data follow positive employment indications in yesterday's consumer confidence report and may very well pull expectations higher, at least to a degree, for January's employment report.

Recent History Of This Indicator
ADP's employment estimate overestimated private payroll growth in both November and December, but not by much. Forecasters expect ADP's estimate to come in at 168,000 in what would signal improved strength for the January employment report.

Definition
The ADP national employment report is computed from a subset of ADP records that represent approximately 400,000 U.S. business clients and approximately 23 million U.S. employees working in all private industrial sectors. ADP contracted with Moody’s Analytics to compute a monthly report that would ultimately help to predict monthly nonfarm payrolls from the Bureau of Labor Statistic's employment situation. The ADP report only covers private (excluding government) payrolls.  Why Investors Care

[Chart]
The new ADP employment report is aimed at improving payroll forecasts by providing information in advance of the employment report.
