Treasury Budget
Released On 5/10/2017 2:00:00 PM For Apr, 2017
Treasury Budget - Level$-176.2 B$182.4 B

The government's deficit has improved after April, as a monthly surplus of $182.4 billion brings down the year-to-date deficit to $344.4 billion for a 2.4 percent decline from this time last year (April is the seventh month of the government's fiscal year.) A sharp decline in Medicare is the chief positive on the outlays side followed by a decline in defense spending. April is the largest tax month and individual receipts totaled $249.3 billion in the month with the year-to-date total, at $944.7 billion, slightly higher than a year ago, at 0.4 percent.

The U.S. Treasury releases a monthly account of the surplus or deficit of the federal government. Changes in the budget balance reflect Federal policy on spending and taxation. The government's fiscal year begins in October.  Why Investors Care
