PMI Manufacturing Index
Released On 2/1/2017 9:45:00 AM For Jan, 2017
Level54.3 55.0

Markit's U.S. manufacturing sample reported a very strong January, at an index of 55.0 vs 55.1 in the January flash and up solidly from 54.3 in December. New orders accelerated at a 2-year high in the month with both output and employment also showing gains. In an unusual sign of strength, the sample is intentionally boosting inventories in anticipation of strong conditions this year. Strength of demand is being reflected in input costs, which are up, but not yet selling prices which remain flat. One negative is weakness in export growth which is being held back by strength in the dollar. Up later this morning is ISM manufacturing at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Based on monthly questionnaire surveys of selected companies, the Purchasing Managers' Manufacturing Index (PMI) offers an advance indication on month-to-month activity in the private sector economy by tracking changes in variables such as output, new orders, stock levels, employment and prices across manufacturing industries. The final index for the current month is released roughly a week after the flash.  Why Investors Care
