The day's economic news is led by two unusual signs of strength. Jobless claims are down sharply and a comparison with last month offers the first signal of strength for the January employment report. And Philly Fed data are spiking and pointing to gains for the factory sector including price traction.
Stocks remained on the defensive with the Dow posting a fifth straight loss, down 0.4 percent to 19,732. Rates and the dollar were little changed.
