Trade data show a slight narrowing of the gap amid strong cross-border exchange of goods and services. JOLTS point to a gap of their own, between the heavy number of job openings at 5.5 million against a continuing but at least narrowing lag in hirings at a monthly 5.3 million.
Trading was narrow in the stock market where the Dow rose 0.2 percent to 20,090. Losses in the euro and yen helped make for a 0.5 percent rise in the dollar index to 100.36. Demand for Treasuries was up for a second day with the 10-year yield down 2 basis points to 2.40 percent. Oil fell back for a second day, down nearly $1 and near $52. Gold held steady near $1,235.
