April isn't showing the snapback many expected with retail sales managing only moderate gains against a very weak March. Consumer prices also failed to show much life with the core rate posting only a marginal increase. Weak consumer spending and lack of price improvement won't be turning up the heat on the Federal Reserve to raise rates at the June meeting. Markets ended a narrow week little changed Friday with the Dow posting a fractional loss to 20,896.
