Business Barometer Index - Level62.7 60.1 58.6  to 63.0 64.1

Highlights
Small-sample reports on June's economy have been mixed, showing slowing for manufacturing in the Philly and Markit reports but overall acceleration for Chicago. The Chicago PMI rose 1.4 points to what may be an overheated 64.1 that easily tops Econoday's consensus range.

Orders are the convincing center of strength for this sample showing sizable growth in both new orders and unfilled orders. But indications on output actually slowed in the month perhaps the result of capacity stress that includes lengthening lead times that are near 14-year highs and rising input costs that are at 7-year highs.

In special questions, nearly a quarter of the sample said trade issues are affecting purchasing decisions and nearly 40 percent said they are starting to raise wages. Business in Chicago's sample is very good, perhaps too good which points to the risk of imbalances.

Consensus Outlook
Easing strength at a high level is the call for the Chicago PMI with the June consensus at 60.1 vs 62.7 in a May report that showed gains for both new orders and backlogs. This sample has had trouble filling open positions and has been reporting delivery delays and rising costs, all consistent with capacity stress.

Definition
The Institute For Supply Management - Chicago compiles a survey and a composite diffusion index of business conditions in the Chicago area. Since October 2011, the survey has been conducted by Market News International. Manufacturing and non-manufacturing firms both are surveyed. Hence, it is not directly comparable to pure manufacturing surveys. Readings above 50 indicate an expanding business sector.  Why Investors Care

[Chart]
The ISM-Chicago survey, known as the Chicago PMI, is posted at month-end for the current month and is often used, though it has a non-manufacturing component, as a barometer for the ISM manufacturing index which is released the next business day.
