Global institutional investors were much more risk averse in August, according to State Street, whose Investor Confidence Index based on the actual portfolio holdings of their institutional clients fell to 94.3, down 7.4 points from July's downwardly revised reading of 101.7. Showing global investors decreasing their equity holdings, the sharp drop in the index was led by a 10.6 point decline in the North American sub-index to 92.5, the lowest reading of the year, which overshadowed an increase of 8.1 points to 99.5 in the European sub-index. The sub-index for Asia also aided the overall decline, falling 0.8 points while still remaining in accumulation territory at 102.7. Elevated trade uncertainty and geopolitical turmoil have prompted global institutional investors to become risk averse and reduce their equity holdings, especially in North America, State Street said, noting renewed worries over Italy's debt burden and President Trump's trade policies.

The State Street Investor Confidence Index measures confidence by looking at actual levels of risk in investment portfolios. This is not an attitude survey. The State Street Investor Confidence Index measures confidence directly by assessing the changes in investor holdings of equities. The more of their portfolio that institutional investors are willing to invest in equities, the greater their confidence. The report's main index is global and is based on activity in 45 countries. The report tracks more than 22 million transactions annually. There are three published components: North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. The separate weightings of the three components vary month to month based on investment activity and are not published. Also included in the global index, but also not published, is activity in South America and the Middle East.  Why Investors Care
