Job openings continue to rise against what may be a dwindling labor force, and the rise appears to be giving workers the confidence to look for better jobs as the quits rate -- something Jerome Powell refers to as an indication of labor market constraint -- is on the rise.
Stocks are also on the rise as the Dow posted a 0.4 percent gain to 25,971 and the Nasdaq continues to bounce back from last week's heavy profit taking, rising 0.6 percent to 7,972.
Oil, up nearly $2 and near $69.50, is also on the rise as Hurricane Florence looks to land on the Atlantic Coast and as Tropical Storm Isaac may be heading into the oil rich Gulf of Mexico. The dollar and gold were little changed but not bonds where selling pushed the yield on the 10-year Treasury up several basis points to 2.98 percent.
